The Best Anti Aging Products Are Multi-Functional

By Clare Morgan

When you buy your furniture, you think it has to be multi-functional. When you buy your clothes, you know it's a good deal when your dress can also double as a skirt. When you choose your mobile phone, you're not satisfied if it can't be anything else other than a mobile phone. So why should you be satisfied, that your anti aging products can only make you look younger, when it can also make you cancer-free?
Sunscreen vs Skin Cancer and Photoaging
"Wear sunscreen," says a line from a famous Baz Luhrmann-directed music video in the 90s. It has been more than 20 years since it aired, and in that time if you followed this deceptively simple advice, Robert S. Stern, M.D. of the New England Journal of Medicine says you have already reduced your risk of having actinic keratosis by around 40 percent.
Actinic Keratosis or solar keratosis are scaly, wart-like bumps on the skin (about two to six millimeters) caused by prolonged exposure to the sun's UV rays. Experts have also found links between the presence of actinic keratosis and higher risks of contracting non melanoma skin cancer. Wrinkles and spider veins are tell-tale signs of possibly already having actinic keratosis.
But, the good news is that - wrinkles, spider veins, actinic keratosis, and skin cancer - all of them are preventable. And this is where sunscreens become one of the best anti aging products in the history of skin care. Because not only is it acknowledged by different dermatological associations as the most effective against preventing skin cancer, it also does double duty in fighting photoaging.
Although at this point, fighting photoaging may seem a trivial pursuit as compared to fighting skin cancer, it is nonetheless a good motivational drive to start using sunscreen religiously. Besides, the things that lead us to photoaging are the same stressors that make us susceptible to skin cancer risks. This means, you're taking care two skin problems with one anti aging product.
Here's a simple buyer's guide when choosing sunscreen:
Just because it has higher SPF (sun protection factor) doesn't mean it's better. According to a New York Times article a sunscreen labeled with SPF 100 blocks UVB rays by 99 percent, however, SPF 50 sunscreen blocks 98 percent, only a mere one percent lower. And the recommended SPF 30 sunscreen? 96.7 percent. The trick is to apply generously and re-apply generously.
There are two kinds of ultraviolet rays that we should protect ourselves from - UVB and UVA. UVB is the ray that gets you sunburned, while UVA is the so-called aging ray. For UVB check the SPF protection offered by the product, normally an SPF 30 is enough to give you ample amount of protection. For UVA rays, dermatologists recommend looking for ingredients such as avobenzone and Mexoryl SX.
Aside from sunscreen, use other means of protection as well such as hats, umbrellas, and long sleeved shirts especially if you're going to stay out in the sun for a long time.
Paraben-free Makes You Cancer-Free
According to the Environmental Working Group's database, there are over 10,000 to 25,000 products currently in the market that contain parabens. It's such an overwhelming number, that it seems almost impossible to find products that are paraben-free. This numbers game makes it easy for manufacturers to force consumers to buy paraben-containing products in exchange for shopping convenience.
But if you consider that a number of studies have found parabens to have strong links with cancer (breast cancer, skin cancer), endocrine disruption (early puberty, mood disorders), immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity (low sperm count for males, placenta & ovaries related conditions for females), and a range skin irritations, alotting a few more minutes reading labels doesn't seem so tedious now is it?
If you're still not convinced why paraben-free skin care and cosmetic products are one of the best anti aging products, just think about it this way. Products with parabens have longer shelf life, while paraben-free skin care and cosmetic products increase YOUR shelf life.
Ingredients to look out for when buying skin care, anti aging, and cosmetic products:
- Methyl, Propyl, Butyl, and Ethyl Paraben
- Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea
- Triethanolamine

Stem Cell Technology Makes the Best Anti Aging Products
You're probably thinking why a technology that's more associated with cloning has to do with anti aging products and being cancer-free right? Well, a lot. Although stem cell technology is more popularly known for producing Dolly the sheep, the same technology is now being hailed by many experts as the new frontier in cancer research.
With stem cell technology harped on the stem cell's self-dividing and self-renewing ability, it's like the natural antithesis for cancer cells that tend to destroy other cells. This is particular technology is very helpful on tissues that are most prone to cancer such as the lining of the stomach and intestines, blood, and skin.
And this cell regeneration ability is why stem cell technology has been very popular among anti aging products, that rely on cell rejuvenation for results. Skin problems such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and fine lines can be drastically reversed by stimulating the cells deep within the layers of the skin.
Only a few products in the market have this kind of technology and most of them are steeply priced, high-end skin care and cosmetics. But why look at price tag, when you have a Fountain of Youth and universal antidote cocktail as one of your beauty products?
